Tentative tutorials – character design pt 4

drank

I drank quite a bit a couple of days ago. To say it plainly, I got shit faced drunk.

in fact, I got so drunk that I can’t remember half of the evening. I just know that I woke up yesterday with the hangover to rival all hangovers.

I only mention this, to explain the effort that has been put into todays piece. I it is sunday today and I still have little appetite and a ringing headache.

So when I sat down with my wacom tablet today, it was with low expectations. with that in mind, I think I did quite well… all thing considering

 I have had a bad day in terms of Concept art. What you see above has taken me all day and I would not call either of these any good. In fact I kind of think neither of them are of a standard that I would like to upload, but sadly I decided that I would be very candid on this blog, so here they are.

The best I can say in my own defense, is that I worked allot, so the failure is complete an artistic one. I simply don’t have the skill required to make this kind of thing work.

Exam sketches

for the Last couple of says I have been spending allot of my time at the Design school.

I do this because I have a project I need to finish for my exam. In fact, I won’t be able to go to the exam if this project is not finished, so I have allot riding on this project.

This combined with the fact that the exam is on the 17th, is adequate to make me freak out just a little bit freaked out. Never the less, I promised myself that I would finish this project by the end of september I will be damned if I don’t reach that deadline.

Until then, I will just have to get used to working night at the school and look forward to october when everything will hopefully settle down a bit.

your best cheerleader

On bad drawing days, and I have been having those more and more frequently lately, it is always good to know that you have someone in your corner. someone who is always willing to cheer you on, even if you are at your lowest… well sort of anyway

portraiture of friends

today I decided that it would be great to try and draw a portrait for the first time in a while.

 

The magic, when it comes to a portrait, comes when you start to recognize the person you are drawing in the drawing.

 

sadly, with this piece, that magic never really came, so my friend who I drew here, will have to wait a while longer to get a real portrait of her.

 

the last of us

There are a couple of yearly events that I have started to take seriously.

These events include: christmas, the first real day of summer, the annual gaming conference in malmö and the release of a small group of elite blockbuster games.

This last event has come to pass some time last week, as Naughty dog released their masterpiece “the last of us”.

I don’t use that word (masterpiece) lightly  but after playing through this newest title from this developer I understand why I own a playstation and why I will be purchasing the new one when it comes out.

This game is about as good as gaming gets. the story is engaging and the character performances in this game are so captivating  that the animators, voice actors and mo-cap people should collectively be awarded an Oscar for making some of the most layered characters on screen currently.

at the end of the day, I think that this game has a very real chance of becoming the game of the year, and if it doesn’t walk away with some kind of accolade  I will be sourly disappointed

Bioshock infinite

I just purchased the game bioshock infinite with money that I do not have.
Yep, I small not proud of this, but I decided to ended my self even further and get this game. I haven’t played more than a couple of hours so far, so the jury is still out on the game as a whole, but I liked the previous games in the series, so I imagine I will like this one as well.
So far I am in love with the character Elisabeth, who is the closest thing the gaming world comes to a Disney princess.

smug bitch

this is a quick piece of practice I did to really get into colour. I have been working exclusively in black and white trying my best to add colour later. I have recently realized that while that might work for some artist, It just doesn’t work for me. If I am going to get vibrant colour into a piece I need to be working with colour from the word go.

with that in mind, I created this smug looking bitch. she was kind of meant to be like the meanest character from “mean girls” all grown up and with a bad haircut.

what movie?

I have done something bad.

asmost of you know, I have been working quite hard, In fact I have been working so hard that I barely have had time to go home and eat dinner. That is why I decided to take the weekend.

Yes, I decided to take a full weekend where I did not have to work at all It has been wonderful and terrifying. On one hand I have had time to do thing I haven’t done in ages, Like go swimming and have an actual dinner where I sit down with plates and cutlery and stuff, on the other hand it has made me realize just how much work I still have to do. the tunnelvision of the last three weeks has made me almost blind to anything but what I was doing at the time. the free time has give me an overview of the project and sadly that has made me realize a few thing.

Today is sunday and as such, the last day of my minnie vacation. It has been allot of fun, so I thought to finish the whole thing off I would challenge myself to draw something new.

what you see above is my rendering of a still from a movie. this drawing was really challenging to so, since I really don’t do environments that much.
