back to basics

05after a short break of a little over a week I decided that today was the day for me to go back to what I know I can do well. granted, this is not my best work, but it does represent one of the things I have come to know that I do well, portraits.

This particular piece was done in 10 minutes and while not precise or exact, I like the way I was able to capture light falling on this guys face.

back to basics

unimpressedback when I started at my design school, we had a course called perspective. It was basically drawing allot of these cubes in allot of different shapes and sizes. at the time I had no formal drawing training, which my style reflected, so I found this whole thing very enlightening.

Since then I have had tried out allot of things. I have carved out a niche for myself and I have figured out what exactly it is that I want to do. so here, almost 4 years later I have decided to go back to these kinds of drawings.

The reason for this abrupt shift in drawing training, is that I have realized that, while I have allot of training in figure drawing, I really suck at anything to do with perspective.

So I have decided that the best thing to do is to go back to the drawing board, literally, and work on my fundamentals once again.

Don’t worry though, this new regime of mine will not interfere with my rigorous blogging. I will keep up the quality that you have come to expect… which is to say very poor.

the back-up folder

102

back in 2011 I had another daily blog.

This particular blog was animation themed and really centered around getting me into the California institute of arts, which has a legendary animation department. you can see the blog here

This is a dream that I have abandoned, but the full year of blogging did teach me something about consistency and writing.

One of the neat tricks that I figures out early, was to have a back-up folder on my computer. this is a folder where you put any topic that you think might be fun to discuss or any extra drawing that you just have lying around. This means that on days when you are feeling particularly uninspired, you would always have a fallback to go to.

Sadly this is not something that I have employed for this new-years resolution, which is why you get another Disney style portrait. However I do plan to get one going soon, so stuff like this doesn’t happen again
