Development Diary 5

char_02

one of the things that we worked allot on was the design for our main character, We wanted her to seem vulnerable, but capable.

We had already decided that she was going be a young woman, but what kind of character she would be, was still up for grabs.

We started to look at characters from popular culture from which we might draw inspiration. we looked at heather from the third silent hill game, we re-watched Juno to look at Ellen Page’s Performance and we sat down and played “the last of us” to get a sense of Ashley Johnsons performance as Ellie.

As Nice and fleshed out, as all of those characters are, we decided to go in a slightly different direction with our character.

We wanted a girl who was less about the wisecracks and funny observations and more about the helplessness of being alone in the dark.

We wanted a girl who was not a fighter, not a capable part of the world, not a strong woman, we wanted a scared little girl who was in way over her head.

With that in mind, we sat down and started to sketch out some character ideas, which is what you see above.

Development diary 1

Untitled-4

Over the last couple of months we at postmaster games have been developing a small video-game to test out our might at video-game development.

So far it is going well, as we are almost at the halfway point of our development cycle on the game which is currently called “unsafe”

What you see above is some of the early concept art for this title which is a horror based 2D puzzle adventure game.

we hope to be able to share more information with you as the development moves on.

please share this post master post, if you like what you see.

The start of a project

05

Ok, so as you see, I am still fighting the good fight with Concept art.

The good thing os that this art is not just art for the sake of it. These are concepts for a game that I will be making these next 5 weeks.

I don’t know anything about the game yet and by the looks of it, I still don’t know much about concept art.

But I will persist with this kind of art, because I need to be able to do it, if I ever want to be a game designer. Hopefully these next couple of weeks will heighten my skill and my resolve that this is the kind of work I want to do all day every day.

Versions – faces

04as some of you know, I have been working on a pitch video for my newest venture into gaming called versions. This is the AI character that I created. She is called Gwendolyn and she is the guide that the main has to guide him along in the game.

I created her with the specific purpose of seeming odd and slightly off putting. She is kind of the embodiment of the Iphone app “siri” and as such has to fall deep into the uncanny valley.

Because she is a computer program I also designed her to be somewhat sexless, to make the player feel even more at odds with this helpful hand.

The exciting thing about this stage in the game, is that I am only a couple of steps from actually animating the character, which I am looking very much forward to. So, I hope to be back with some great animations in a small while.

spit paint – day 1

28

I was recently made aware of the facebook group spit paint, which is devoted to speed paints of 30 minutes or less.

Today, I decided that I would joint the group, for about a week.

The great thing about spit paint is that they give you topics to work from. Every day they will display 4 words that you can then choose to illustrate. Today one of those words were electric, which is where this plug came into play.

I actually wanted it to curve through the forest like a snake, but I ran out of time drawing, so this is how it ended up.

Still, for my first speed paint in about a month, it is far from the worst thing I have ever done.

ticket off

24I have got to be honest and say that I have had a very long day, so please forgive me if I am not up to my usual banter. What I can say, is that I managed to give you this insight into my process, which for better or for worse depicts my struggles with art. Please follow this link to see how this drawing was made.

the creepy announcer, part 2

23I have to admit that I have fallen a little bit in love with this androgynous cyborg, if that is in fact what he/she/it is. So much so, that I made this 3D model of him/her/it.

Yeah, I am kind of making it up as I go along, which is new for me and it’s really unlike me, as I usually plan everything out weeks, sometimes months in advance.

This time though, I am pretty much leaving it all up to my own creative whims, which is actually a really fun way of working. Over-thinking is a thing of the past… well, at least, for this project.

This does not mean that Gwendolyn (that is his/her/it’s name for now) will become the main character in the game, but he/she/it might get a bit more screen time than I had initially intended. At the very least, he/she/it is the focus of my pitch video.
