mountains and molehills

45As some of you know, I mostly do these daily uploads to become a better artist.

That really is the main reason I I toil away at half assed portraiture and dumb color blocking (which is what you see above is).

You should know, however that what you see on the blog really is just the tip of the self-help-iceberg.

Below these drawings are hours and hours spent drawing cubes in a large sketch book. I have shown you a couple of the creations from that sketchbook a couple of months back, but I don’t think you understand the depth I go into with those god damn cubes.

It is usually 2 or 3 hours a day drawing nothing but cubes and scrutinizing every line, till I am blue in the face.

then Once that is done, I usually watch 2 or 3 how to draw videos or speed paints, to get some tips and then I call it a day.

Just a quick reminder, this is my part time, so I still have work to content with.

Don’t get me wrong, I love to draw and do it out of my own free will and even enjoy it most of the time. But there are days such as today, when you are battling with a line in relation to perspective on your fourth page of cube drawings, when you just want to throw up your hands and say, I give the fuck up.

happy with this one

02

As you probably know from reading every post of this blog down to the final detail, I can be quite harsh with myself when it comes to drawings.

As a matter of fact, I think I am disappointed with my drawing more often than I am happy with them.

So this is one of those rare times when I have say, I actually kind of like this one.

I don’t know if it is the fact that I was playing around with some new brushes on this piece or the models overall look, but this piece came out OK.

I will ride this high for the rest of the day. Get ready for tomorrow when I will probably be really down on myself once again

Candlestick

The trouble with learning to draw is the number of times you seem to run into a brick wall. Now I don’t mean this literally, but at least a couple oftentimes a week I run into a subject matter that I simply cannot draw. Of cause beats the alternative of staring at a blank screen with no ideas what so ever.
The best therapy I have found to this day, to combat this feeling, is to simply just get up and do it all over again. It stands to reason that if I do a drawing daily, some or later I will strike gold witness a drawing.
So, still then, you will get a drawing of a candlestick.

shop talk

104

If you will allow it, I am going to talk shop for a second or two.

I love bright colours, as a matter of fact, I think it is the prettiest when the skin tones on a face (or other bodypart) is comprised of allot of colours, rather than just a dull greyish yellow.

This is why I am not a big fan of the colouring technique. for those of you not in the know, the coloruing technique, is a technique in digital drawing where you draw a character or a scene in black/white and then convert it to colours.

If you google this, you will finds tons of tutorials instructing you on how to colour your finished sketch. The reason that I dislike these drawings, is that the colour that are chosen usually lack any depth.

I have to admit, however, that it is allot more practical to draw something in black/white, than it is to draw something in colour. If you just look through this blog, you will find several posts that are in black/white simply because I couldn’t get around to adding colour.

That is why I was so thrilled in finding a technique that kind of works for me. I won’t say that it works all the way or is perfect, but it kind of works.

the technique is really quite simple, I drew a rough sketch of the character and the lighting I wanted, then set up the contrast and added an overall colour. Then I just continued drawing. I simple just drew on top the new coloured piece with more colours.

This is a technique that needs some refinement, but I might just be into it.
